Re:     MANDATORY RADIATION SAFETY TRAINING

New York City Department of Health (NYCDOH) regulations require radiation safety training for all personnel working with radiation producing equipment or working in areas where radioactive materials are used and/or stored. The required training includes an initial training session and annual refresher sessions.  The Radiation Safety Office provides this training, tailored to the variety of workers at the CUMC, NYPH and NYSPI facilities.  All personnel must attend a lecture appropriate for their position.

New personnel working with radiation producing equipment or in areas where radioactive materials are used and/or stored must attend an Initial Training lecture before a personal radiation badge-monitor will be issued.  Thereafter, all personnel are required to attend an Annual Refresher session.  The Responsible Investigators (RI's) and/or Radiation Safety Coordinators (RSC's) are required to ensure that personnel receive both the initial and annual refresher training provided by the Radiation Safety Office.

Training sessions are separated into two categories, Human-Use and Non-Human Use Human-use includes both clinical and research areas.  Personnel should attend the first scheduled ‘Initial Training Lecture’ for the appropriate job category, following the start of their employment.   The initial and refresher training schedule is attached.  Please note the date, time and location of the sessions.  Please note that annual refresher training for Human-Use areas is scheduled separately by each Department. This will allow us to address the specific requirements for those individuals.

If you have any questions please call the Radiation Safety Office at x5-0303.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
